Everyone has different opinions on the
effect of allowing concealed handguns, but I think that concealed handguns
strengthen self-defense more than it strengthens lethal assault. The police
cannot always be there to help people in danger, so citizens should have the
ability to protect themselves.
Not only
does the Second Amendment ensure the right to carry a handgun in appropriate
areas, but most adults are extremely responsible with their guns, because
owning a gun will raise your awareness, Nick Leghorn found that concealed carry
permit holders were actually 5.48 times less likely to commit violent crime
with a firearm than someone with no permit or gun (that legally belongs to
them).
The
majority of Americans support concealed carry, so when concealed carry
supporting laws were passed in 1977, public shootings declined by 84%, deaths
by 90% and injuries by 82%.
In 2007, a volunteer security guard at the New
Life megachurch who was carrying a concealed handgun shot an attacker who had
open fired in the church. If the man had not been there with a concealed gun,
many would have died to the shooter.
Some people think that with more
Americans carrying guns, gun related violence will also increase, weather on
accident or on purpose, and I can understand the reasoning behind this, for
example, a toddler playing with a gun left on the table and injuring or killing
somebody, or an angry driver not thinking and pulling a gun on somebody.
However, most legal concealed carriers know better and they know how to prevent
these things, as they will usually be given a safety course and they must meet
specific requirements.
And I realize that some people obtain
gun-carrying permits with malicious intent, or they do not pay attention to the
important information. And that is why I also think that to get a permit, the
training should be extensively elonged and that they will have to pass a test
over what they learned and sign an oath declaring that they will abide by the
rules.
Therefore, I support the right of
concealed carry for everyone, both to help them in self defense and make
everyone feel safer.
